Checksum Verification

data integrity verification process that generates a unique mathematical fingerprint (hash) of a file, used to confirm that media has been copied or transferred without corruption. In post-production, checksum verification is critical during every media transfer: from camera cards to on-set backup drives, from set to post facility, from editorial to VFX vendors, and through cloud-based delivery systems. Common algorithms include MD5, SHA-1, and xxHash (preferred for speed with large media files). Tools like ShotPut Pro, Hedge, and Silverstack automate checksum-verified copies. A failed checksum means the file was corrupted during transfer and must be re-copied from a verified source. Without checksums, corrupted frames can go undetected until they surface in the final grade or delivery.
