Dede Allen (1923–2010) was one of the most influential American film editors of the postwar era. Her work on films such as Bonnie and Clyde, The Hustler, Dog Day Afternoon, and Reds reshaped expectations of what studio-era editing could feel like: less polite, more interior, more willing to use ellipsis, interruption, and sonic force. Allen was also a major institutional figure, serving as a mentor and later as a film executive, but her lasting importance is aesthetic — she normalized editorial boldness in American narrative cinema.
