Dynamic Square Screen
theoretical concept proposed by Sergei Eisenstein for a cinema screen in the shape of a square. This neutral canvas would allow for the projection of multiple, variable aspect ratios—horizontal, vertical, or otherwise—within the same film, enabling the editor and director to change the frame geometry dynamically to match the dramatic needs of each shot or sequence. This concept was a radical, early theoretical challenge to the fixed horizontal standard, envisioning a flexible frame that could adapt its geometry—including vertical and other orientations—to suit the dramatic and compositional needs of the shot.
notes
The source positions Eisenstein's idea as a prescient 'what if' that predicted the format flexibility we now take for granted in new media. It's a historical counter-argument to the tyranny of the fixed horizontal frame, proving that the great theorists were thinking about breaking the box from the very beginning.
