Editing Duel

n exercise or competition where two or more editors are challenged to create a finished piece from the same source material under a strict time limit. The duel often involves deliberately flawed or limited footage to test problem-solving skills and creative ingenuity over the quality of the source material. It serves as a high-pressure test of an editor's core competencies: speed, resourcefulness, and narrative construction. A common variant involves each editor working with deliberately sabotaged footage shot by their opponent, testing not just creative assembly but also technical problem-solving and 'rescue' skills under pressure.

notes

This format externalizes the internal monologue of an editor. By forcing them to work with garbage under a time limit, you get to see all the compromises, tricks, and moments of brilliance that usually happen in the dark. It's editorial performance art.
