freeze frame

also: freeze-frame

freeze frame suspends motion by holding a single film frame or video image on screen for an extended duration. The device can punctuate an ending, isolate a decisive gesture, or transform a moving image into a reflective or ironic tableau. Because cinema normally depends on motion, the freeze frame announces emphasis by interrupting temporal flow.

notes

Strong example of how editorial timing can convert motion into thought.

  • The held frame is used as a marked expressive or structural event.
