Pre-emptive Problem-Solving

sophisticated collaborative strategy where an editor identifies a potential structural problem or a possible improvement, creates a version of the cut with the fix, but holds it back until their collaborator (e.g., the director or producer) also perceives the problem. As described by David Helfand, when the collaborator raises the issue, the editor can then immediately offer the pre-made solution. This technique avoids 'fixing things too soon,' respects the collaborator's discovery process, and builds their confidence in the editor's foresight and efficiency.
