Shared Storage
also: SAN · NAS · shared media storage · collaborative storage
networked storage infrastructure that allows multiple editors and assistants to access the same media pool simultaneously, enabling real-time collaboration on a single project. Shared storage systems—whether SAN (Storage Area Network) or NAS (Network Attached Storage)—are the backbone of multi-editor workflows in post facilities. The system must provide sufficient bandwidth for the number of concurrent streams at the required resolution and codec. For example, multiple streams of ProRes 422 HQ at 4K require 10GbE or faster networking. Shared storage eliminates the need to duplicate media across individual workstations and ensures all team members are working with the same files. In Avid-based workflows, the Avid NEXIS or ISIS storage integrates directly with bin-locking and project-sharing features.
