Socratic Editing

collaborative technique where the editor uses strategic, open-ended questions to guide a director toward a creative solution, rather than directly stating an opinion or criticism. By asking questions like, 'What was the thinking behind this angle?' or 'What are we hoping the audience feels here?', the editor facilitates a dialogue that allows the director to re-evaluate their own choices and arrive at a conclusion organically, preserving their sense of ownership and creative authority.

notes

Walter Murch's concept of 'Transition as Inquiry' is a perfect practical application of the Socratic method. Each cut isn't an answer, but a question posed to the audience, forcing them to participate in the construction of meaning.
