Director-Conductor vs. Editor-Controller

metaphorical framework for distinguishing the core functions of directing and editing. The director acts as a conductor, instigating and guiding the performance of a large ensemble (the cast and crew) on set to generate possibilities. In contrast, the editor functions as a controller, deliberately and precisely manipulating the recorded elements to shape the final, fixed product.

notes

The 'Collaborative Rebuttal' is a key tactic for shifting the dynamic away from the 'editor-controller' model. By showing you'll execute the director's vision, you prove you're not trying to seize control, which ironically makes them more likely to cede it to you when you have a better idea.
