Contextual Performance Modulation

he editorial process of selecting and refining an actor's performance based on its place within the fully assembled film, rather than in isolation. An editor may initially choose an intense take for a scene, but later swap it for a more subdued one after seeing how it fits into the character's overall emotional arc. As editor Tom Cross notes, the editorial target is 'often a moving one' because context can illuminate a moment that feels out of place.

criteria

  • Experiment with creating multiple versions of a scene from the same footage to push a performance in different emotional directions (e.g., from longing to detached) to understand the full range of possibilities.
