LUT (Look Up Table)
also: LUT · look-up table · viewing LUT · creative LUT · technical LUT
mathematical transform that maps input color values to output color values, used throughout the post pipeline for both technical conversion and creative look development. Technical LUTs (like a Rec.709 conversion LUT) transform log-encoded camera footage into a standard viewing color space so dailies look natural. Creative LUTs apply a specific aesthetic look—a film stock emulation, a desaturated thriller feel, or a warm romantic palette. In the Frame.io workflow model, LUTs are established during capture by the DIT, carried through editorial as viewing transforms, and handed off to the colorist as a starting point for the final grade. LUTs can be 1D (affecting only luminance) or 3D (affecting luminance and color simultaneously). They are non-destructive metadata applied on top of the source image.
