ACES (Academy Color Encoding System)

also: ACES · Academy Color Encoding System · ACES workflow

n industry-standard color management framework developed by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that provides a standardized, scene-referred linear light working space for the entire post-production pipeline. ACES uses Input Device Transforms (IDTs) to convert camera-specific color data into a universal ACES color space, allowing footage from different cameras to be seamlessly intercut and graded together. Output Device Transforms (ODTs) then convert from ACES to the target display or deliverable format (Rec.709, P3, Rec.2020). ACES is particularly valuable for VFX-heavy productions because compositing in linear light produces physically accurate results, and the standardized pipeline means VFX elements can be rendered back to any output format without look shifting. The system preserves the full dynamic range and color gamut of the original capture throughout the pipeline. AI-driven tools are emerging to automate this process by detecting camera IDTs and creating a managed starting point, effectively acting as a user-friendly front-end for an ACES-like workflow.
