As described by editor Steven Mirkovich, this involves quickly assembling the first few days of footage into a polished cut, complete with music and sound effects, and showing it to the director on their first day or weekend off. By demonstrating capability and a shared vision early on, the editor gains the director's confidence, which in turn grants the editor more creative freedom and autonomy throughout the rest of the process.
