Temp as Tonal Road Map
he practice of using temp music not as a literal guide for the composer to copy, but as a 'road map' to communicate the desired mood, tone, and placement of music in a sequence. As described by editor Martin Walsh, this approach provides the composer with a starting point—'This is where we think it should be... and this is the kind of the mood we're going for'—while explicitly encouraging an original composition. It acknowledges the risk of the composer being forced to imitate a popular style if the direction isn't handled carefully. Beyond simply setting a tone, temp music can be used as a direct rhythmic and structural guide for the picture cut itself, a technique known as 'Music-Led Cutting'.
notes
There's a crucial distinction between using temp as a 'tonal road map' and the more aggressive technique of 'Music-Driven Scene Sculpting.' The former guides the mood, while the latter dictates the very architecture of the cuts, letting the music discover the scene's structure. Knowing which approach to use is a mark of an experienced editor.
