Remediation in Editing
he process by which new media forms adopt and modify the characteristics, aesthetics, and conventions of older media. In editing, this manifests as new formats (like vertical video) inheriting and reinterpreting the language of older forms (like cinematic cuts or television graphics) while also developing their own unique grammar dictated by the new technology and context.
notes
The democratization of media creation, as described in 'The Ohio Mozart Prophecy,' has exponentially increased the amount of 'old' media (desktop UIs, phone screens, amateur video) available to be remediated into 'new' professional media. The prophecy created the raw material for modern remediation.
criteria
- Apply physical properties to digital effects: Add a subtle 'bounce' or 'overshoot' to a digital zoom to mimic the physical feedback of a real camera move, as seen in the MKBHD Bounce Cut.
visual examples
- Racer Trash projects (c. 2020s) — The collective remediates classic films into live, chaotic Twitch streams, layering them with digital artifacts like tweets and 3D graphics, fundamentally changing the medium of consumption.
- The Racer Trash collective's process of reworking entire films like Hausu (1977) into new works for a live Twitch audience, incorporating new media forms like tweets and 3D graphics.
