Segmented Remix Filmmaking

collaborative production model where a pre-existing film is deconstructed into segments, which are then distributed among various creators to be individually re-edited, remixed, or entirely recreated. The final work is an assemblage of these disparate segments, resulting in a chaotic, multi-authored collage that critiques or satirizes the original source material. This approach prioritizes creative freedom and individual expression over narrative or stylistic coherence. This aligns with Francesco Casetti's concept of the modern spectator as a 'performer,' who shifts from passive attendance to active making and re-contextualization of cinematic material.

notes

The key, as Picasso and other 'remix artists' demonstrate, isn't just to copy or re-contextualize. It's to add your unique perspective in the transformation. Without that final step, it's just plagiarism or pastiche. With it, it's innovation.
