AAF / OMF Interchange

also: AAF · OMF · Advanced Authoring Format · Open Media Framework

ile interchange formats used to transfer timeline, media, and metadata between different post-production applications and departments. AAF (Advanced Authoring Format) is the more modern and capable format, carrying edit decisions, multiple video and audio tracks, effects metadata, and either embedded or referenced media. OMF (Open Media Framework) is the older predecessor, limited primarily to audio data with embedded media, and still widely used for audio post turnovers. Both formats serve the critical function of translating editorial work between systems—from Avid to Pro Tools for sound, from Premiere to DaVinci Resolve for color, or from editorial to VFX. The choice between AAF, OMF, EDL, and XML depends on the receiving application's capabilities and the complexity of the timeline being transferred.

in short

File formats for transferring timeline and media data between post-production applications.

usage

Used at every departmental handoff—editorial to color, editorial to sound, editorial to VFX—as the vehicle for communicating edit decisions.
