EDL (Edit Decision List)

also: edit decision list · EDL · CMX EDL

text-based document that records every edit in a sequence as a list of timecode-referenced decisions, specifying source reels, in/out points, transition types, and duration. Originally developed for the CMX linear editing systems in the 1970s, the EDL remains the most universal interchange format for communicating edit information between different systems, departments, and facilities. The standard CMX 3600 format is still widely used alongside newer XML and AAF interchange formats.

in short

A text file listing every edit as timecode-referenced decisions, used to transfer edit information between systems.

usage

EDLs are generated by NLEs and used in online editing, color grading, audio post-production, and VFX workflows to conform or recreate an edit. The CMX 3600 format supports one video track and up to four audio tracks. For complex multi-track timelines, AAF or XML formats are preferred, but EDLs remain the fallback for cross-platform compatibility. Every professional editor should understand how to read and generate an EDL.
