Dailies Stringout (Selects Reel)

sequence of footage from a single day's shoot, arranged in chronological shooting order (not story order). Often comprised of only the "best" or circled takes, this sequence is exported for the director, producers, and studio to review progress and confirm the quality of the material being captured. It serves as a daily progress report and a first look at the film's emerging visual identity. A common practice is to create a separate stringout for each shooting day, and then to further condense these into a 'sizzle reel' or 'best of' timeline containing only the absolute strongest moments from the entire shoot. Editors often create these 'select reels' after screening all dailies to isolate the best moments, performances, and line readings, providing a condensed palette of material from which to build the scene. A variation on the line-by-line stringout is the 'chunked pre-edit,' as described by editor Joe Walker. Instead of assembling every take of a single line, the assistant editor creates sequences of 30-40 second chunks of a scene, editing all available setups for that chunk in a line. This provides a more manageable way to review options for complicated, high-coverage scenes without the 'too detailed' nature of a full performance cut stringout. The use of a dailies stringout (or selects reel) can be context-dependent. While highly effective for action, montages, or purely visual sequences, some editors avoid them for traditional dialogue scenes unless there is significant improvisation, preferring to mark favorite moments directly in the master clips. These reels are not just organizational tools; they are creative springboards that allow an editor to rapidly assemble new scenes or respond to notes without having to re-engage with the entirety of the raw footage. This preparatory step is the primary antidote to 'premature cutting,' ensuring that the editor has a comprehensive mental map of the material before committing to structural choices.

notes

While a standard stringout is an organizational tool for reviewing all footage, a more curated version focusing only on the 'gold' moments can serve as a creative starting point, a technique known as 'Go for the Gold' editing. One is about comprehensiveness, the other about inspiration.

  • Actively working with the material by creating selects reels is a crucial step to avoid editing oneself into a corner.
