Macro-Pacing

he overall pacing and rhythm of an entire film, as distinct from the shot-to-shot (micro) pacing within a single scene. Macro-pacing is concerned with the rate at which major story beats are revealed and the audience's impression of the story's progression. It addresses whether information is parceled out effectively, preventing the audience from getting ahead of or falling behind the narrative. A key function of managing macro-pacing is identifying and eliminating 'repeated emotional beats'—moments where the film becomes emotionally static—to ensure the audience is constantly progressing along a dynamic emotional journey with clear milestones. This can be achieved through structural choices, such as interweaving storylines with different internal tempos to create an overarching rhythm. This includes the strategic use of 'editorial breath'—deliberate pauses—to allow emotional beats to resonate and to modulate the audience's experience of time and tension across the entire narrative arc. This can be achieved at a scene-by-scene level by consistently applying the 'In Late, Out Early' technique, creating a relentless forward momentum that prevents the audience from disengaging or 'catching their breath'.

notes

John Refoua's metaphor of scenes as 'courses in a meal' is a perfect way to think about macro-pacing. It's not just about fast or slow; it's about the sequence of flavors. An editor acts as the chef, ensuring the audience gets a balanced, satisfying journey rather than three heavy main courses in a row.

visual examples

  • The Social Network (2010) — Features a relentlessly fast macro-pace, driven by rapid-fire dialogue and cross-cutting, to reflect the velocity of the digital age and the protagonist's mind.
  • Inception (2010) — Manages multiple, nested timelines with distinct paces, creating a complex macro-rhythm that builds suspense across different layers of reality.
  • Dunkirk (2017) — The film's entire structure, braiding a week-long, day-long, and hour-long event, is a deliberate act of macro-pacing designed to build relentless suspense.
