VFX Editorial

also: VFX editor · visual effects editor

he specialized editorial role responsible for managing the interface between the main editorial team and the VFX department throughout post-production. The VFX editor maintains the VFX pull list (a master document tracking every VFX shot by ID, vendor, status, and version), prepares turnover packages with plates and reference material, integrates completed VFX shots back into the editorial timeline, manages version control as shots are updated through multiple iterations, and ensures continuity when editorial changes affect shots already in VFX production. On large productions, the VFX editor also tracks shot counts, vendor deadlines, and coordinates with the VFX supervisor and VFX producer. This role requires deep technical knowledge of interchange formats (EDL, XML, AAF), plate preparation, and the ability to communicate editorial intent to compositors and artists.
