This is often achieved through 'technical rolloff,' a process of compressing the dynamic range of the highlights and shadows to ensure they fall within the acceptable broadcast limits without abrupt clipping. Maintaining a legal signal is critical in professional workflows, especially when content is repurposed across different platforms or intended for broadcast, as out-of-gamut signals can cause transmission problems or result in compromised images for clients and sponsors.

The choice of color tool directly impacts your ability to maintain a legal signal. A tool like Offset, which shifts the entire signal, can easily push your highlights above 100 or your shadows below 0. Gamma, on the other hand, is inherently safer because it 'pins' the black and white points, making it much harder to create an illegal signal accidentally.
criteria
- Luminance should not exceed 100 IRE, with specular highlights occasionally permissible up to 108 IRE.
- Black levels should not drop below 7.5 IRE for analog NTSC with setup, or 0 IRE for digital video.
- Chrominance (saturation) must stay within the legal gamut, as visualized on a vectorscope.
