Waveform Monitor

n essential objective tool for analyzing the luminance (brightness) and chrominance (color) values of a video image. It provides a graphical representation of the signal, allowing an editor or colorist to make precise adjustments and ensure technical standards are met, moving beyond the subjective perception of a monitor or the human eye. Its primary function is to provide a fixed, objective reference for color correction. It is used not just to measure luma, but also to analyze color balance through specialized displays like the RGB Parade, which separates the red, green, and blue channels for direct comparison. It maps the luminance (brightness) values of an image from left to right, corresponding to the video frame. The vertical axis represents the intensity, typically measured in IRE units, from pure black (0 or 7.5 IRE) to pure white (100 IRE). It is used to set exposure, contrast, and ensure the signal is broadcast legal. It is the primary tool for objectively evaluating the effects of tonal adjustments from tools like Lift, Gamma, Gain, and Offset, ensuring that black levels are not crushed and highlights are not clipped.

notes

The waveform monitor is the single best tool for visualizing highlight and shadow rolloff. The 'shoulder' of the waveform at the top and the 'toe' at the bottom directly represent the compression curve being applied. A hard, flat line at 100 IRE indicates clipping, while a gentle, curved compression shows a soft rolloff.

criteria

  • Switch to an RGB Parade display to objectively assess and correct color casts by aligning the levels of neutral elements across all three channels.
  • Ensure luma levels stay within the legal range, typically 0 to 100 IRE, to maintain gamut legality for broadcast.
  • Check for crushed blacks: The trace should not be perfectly flat at the bottom (0 or 7.5 IRE) unless intended.
  • Check for blown-out whites: The trace should not be perfectly flat at the top (100 IRE), losing all detail.
  • Ensure signal is legal: The main signal should not exceed 100 IRE, with small specular highlights permitted up to 108 IRE in some standards.
