Vectorscope

specialized video scope that graphically displays the chrominance (color information) of a video signal, independent of its luminance. It maps color hue and saturation onto a circular chart, providing an objective tool for judging color balance, matching shots, and ensuring chroma levels are within legal limits. It is the indispensable partner to the waveform monitor for any serious color work. It visually represents the HSL color model, with hue displayed as the angle and saturation as the distance from the center. This makes it an indispensable tool for eliminating unwanted color casts and verifying that chroma levels are within legal gamut. It graphically represents the hue and saturation of an image on a circular chart. The angle of a point from the center represents its hue, while its distance from the center represents its saturation (chroma). It is instrumental in identifying and eliminating color casts and ensuring color consistency, with a dedicated 'flesh tone line' serving as a key reference for skin tones. In color grading, it is a key tool for achieving color separation; a good rule of thumb is to ensure the signal mass straddles at least two of the scope's quadrants, indicating a healthy distribution of hues rather than a monochromatic cluster.

notes

While the waveform shows you 'how bright,' the vectorscope shows you 'what color and how much.' When you use a tool like Gamma to brighten midtones, the vectorscope will show you if that adjustment is also causing an unwanted color shift or pushing certain hues into oversaturation.

criteria

  • Check that neutral colors (whites, grays, blacks) are represented as a dot in the center of the graticule, indicating a perfect color balance.
  • Use the color targets on the graticule as a reference for ensuring specific colors, like skin tones or brand logos, are accurate.
  • Understand that complementary colors lie directly opposite each other, providing a guide for creative color manipulation.
